With the exception of Coyote and, of course, Vixen, Fox felt a kind of snobbish disdain for most of creation. When he saw Opossum cross his path, carrying away somebody's leg, his disdain was not lessened, but he became curious.
"Good Morning, Opossum." Fox always spoke with politeness because Fox liked to hide his motives.
"You stay away from me, you filthy red rat! I saw this leg first, so it's mine!" Opossum replied.
"I promise you I have no wish to take any leg of yours." Fox replied "I just want to know whose body your leg came off of."
"Armadillo's." Opossum grew somber when he said that, because he considered Armadillo a friend.
"I'm so sorry to hear that. How did he die, if you don't mind my asking?"
"He was killed by Providence."
"I beg your pardon?"
"Providence is the will of God, you faithless cur!"
